Border Builder

Mediterranean plants

Plants suited to a mediterranean planting scheme.

A Mediterranean border evokes the dry, sun-baked hillsides of southern Europe: aromatic, silver-leaved, drought-tolerant planting set among gravel and warm stone. The single most important thing is drainage, as these plants rot in cold, wet winter soil, so plant on a free-draining or raised bed, add plenty of grit, and mulch with gravel rather than bark. Choose a hot, sheltered spot, plant in spring, and water sparingly only while establishing. Many of these plants are culinary and aromatic herbs whose scent is released in the heat. The mistake is rich soil and overwatering. These plants are chosen for the sun-loving, silvery, fragrant character of a Mediterranean scheme, built to relish heat and shrug off drought.

Border Builder is a garden border planner for iPhone and iPad. Pick from the 146 plants below and it works them into a full plan: how many of each, where they go, and how the bed reads through the seasons.
