Yellow is the brightest, most advancing colour in the border, full of warmth and energy, and it carries light into shady corners better than any other. That brilliance is also its difficulty: hard, acid yellows can dominate and clash with pinks, so decide early between cool lemon-yellows and warm golden-yellows and keep largely to one camp. Lime-green foliage and blue or purple flowers are yellow's best companions. Use it to lead the eye or to lift a dull spot, but spread it through the bed rather than clumping it all in one glaring block. These plants span soft primrose to rich gold, across spring, summer and autumn, so you can place yellow with intention.
