Back-of-border plants, over 100cm, give a bed its height, backdrop and sense of enclosure, drawing the eye up and setting off everything in front. Place them at the rear of a one-sided border or down the spine of an island bed, and check the eventual height against what they will stand against, as a tall plant lost against a dark fence is wasted. Many need staking before they need it, so support them early rather than trying to rescue a flopped clump after a summer storm. Allow room to get behind them for maintenance. These plants are chosen to form the tallest layer, from airy see-through screens to solid structural giants that anchor the back of the bed.
