Border Builder

Orange-flowering plants

Plants with orange flowers for a colour-themed border.

Orange is pure warmth, the colour of late summer and autumn, and it brings exuberance to a border that cooler schemes can lack. It is also one of the trickiest to place, clashing badly with pink but glowing against its complementary blue and harmonising beautifully with yellow, bronze and chocolate foliage. Commit to it fully in a hot scheme rather than letting a single orange flower fight the rest of the bed. Apricot and soft tangerine shades are gentler and easier to blend than hard pumpkin-orange. These plants range from soft apricot through to fiery scarlet-orange, giving you the palette for a warm, late-season border that builds towards autumn.

Border Builder is a garden border planner for iPhone and iPad. Pick from the 119 plants below and it works them into a full plan: how many of each, where they go, and how the bed reads through the seasons.
