Evergreen plants

Plants that hold their leaves through winter for year-round border structure.

Evergreens are the quiet framework that holds a garden together through winter, when deciduous planting has retreated to bare earth. Use them to anchor the corners of a border, screen a boundary, or repeat down a bed as a unifying thread. Plant in autumn or spring and water through the first year, as evergreens lose moisture through their leaves even in cold weather and can scorch in a dry, windy winter. Resist the urge to plant only dark green; vary leaf size, texture and the gold or silver-variegated forms. The mistake is a solid wall of one conifer. These plants provide year-round structure, from clippable backbone shrubs to lower furnishing foliage.

Border Builder is a garden border planner for iPhone and iPad. Pick from the 373 plants below and it works them into a full plan: how many of each, where they go, and how the bed reads through the seasons.
