Use them to anchor a border, screen a boundary, frame a view or repeat down a bed as a unifying thread, and remember they read at full strength in winter when you most want substance outside. Plant in autumn or spring and water through the first year, as they transpire even in cold weather and can scorch in a dry, windy winter. Vary leaf size, colour and the gold or silver forms to avoid a flat green wall. These shrubs hold their leaves all year, from clippable backbone plants to lower furnishing evergreens.
