Plants for full sun

Sun-loving plants for a south or west-facing border.

A sunny, south or west-facing aspect with six or more hours of direct light suits the widest range of flowering plants, but it also dries fastest and bakes hardest in high summer. Many sun-lovers actually prefer lean, sharp-draining soil; overfeeding gives soft, floppy growth that needs staking. Mulch to hold moisture, water deeply but infrequently to send roots down, and avoid crowding so air moves freely and foliage stays dry. The classic error is choosing plants that scorch, so favour those with grey, hairy or waxy leaves built to cope with glare. The plants here are selected to thrive in open sun and to keep flowering through the heat.

Border Builder is a garden border planner for iPhone and iPad. Pick from the 1176 plants below and it works them into a full plan: how many of each, where they go, and how the bed reads through the seasons.
